Have you done MBBS abroad or are you planning to do it? Then you should know about FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination). FMGE is a screening test conducted by NMC (National Medical Commission). This test is required for Indian students who have done MBBS outside India and want to practice in India.

What is FMGE 2026?

FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination), now called the NMC Screening Test. It is conducted by NBE (National Board of Examinations) on behalf of NMC. If you:

• Are an Indian citizen
• Have done MBBS from a foreign university
• Want to practice medicine in India

Then you must clear FMGE. Only after that can you register with NMC.

FMGE 2026 Exam Pattern

FMGE is an online (computer-based) test. There are 300 MCQ questions. Time duration is 3.5 hours (210 minutes).

Clearing FMGE is not easy. The passing percentage is usually around 15-20%. So proper preparation is necessary.

FMGE 2026 Syllabus

The FMGE syllabus is based on core MBBS subjects. Questions come from these 19 subjects:

Pre-Clinical Subjects

1. **Anatomy** – Human anatomy, embryology, histology
2. **Physiology** – Body functions, organ systems
3. **Biochemistry** – Metabolism, molecular biology

Para-Clinical Subjects

1. **Pharmacology** – Drugs, therapeutics
2. **Pathology** – Disease mechanisms, laboratory medicine
3. **Microbiology** – Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites
4. **Forensic Medicine** – Medical law, toxicology
5. **Community Medicine** – Public health, epidemiology

Clinical Subjects

1. **Medicine** – Internal medicine, dermatology, psychiatry
2. **Surgery** – General surgery, orthopedics, anesthesia
3. **Pediatrics** – Child health
4. **OBGYN** – Obstetrics and gynecology
5. **Ophthalmology** – Eye diseases
6. **ENT** – Ear, nose, throat
7. **Radiology** – Imaging, radiation

Clinical subjects (Medicine, Surgery, OBGYN, Pediatrics) have the highest weightage. So they should be given priority.

FMGE Preparation Strategy

1. Start Early

The FMGE syllabus is vast. Start preparation at least 4-5 months before.

2. Focus on Clinical Subjects

60% of questions come from clinical subjects. Cover them first.

3. Practice MCQs

Be sure to solve previous year papers and mock tests. This will give you an idea of the exam pattern.

4. Use Standard Books

• Williams Obstetrics
• Nelson Pediatrics

5. Manage Time

300 questions in 3.5 hours — this means 42 seconds per question. Time management is very important.

FMGE Passing Criteria

• General / OBC / EWS: 150 marks (50%)
• SC / ST: 135 marks (45%)

FMGE results are declared in percentile. There is a minimum qualifying percentile. If you score below that, you are considered fail.

What to Do After Clearing FMGE?

Step 1: Check Result

Check the result on the NBE website. If you get passing marks, you are eligible.

Step 2: NMC Registration

Apply for temporary registration on the NMC portal. Upload required documents.

Step 3: Internship

After clearing FMGE, you must complete a 1-year internship in India.

Step 4: Permanent Registration

After completing the internship, get permanent registration from NMC.

Step 5: NEET PG for MD/MS

If you want to study further, you must take NEET PG. This also follows a counselling process.
